While it’s always surf season in Los Cabos, June is an especially “swell” time to catch professional surfing action in the Baja destination. From June 7-12, wave riders from across the globe will gather at Zippers Beach for the fourth annual Los Cabos Open of Surf. The largest surf festival in Mexico and Latin America, the event also elevates the surf culture vibe with music and a Friday night concert.
Premiering as an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Men’s event in 2013, the Los Cabos Open of Surf expanded in 2014 to become the first Women’s ASP 6-Star competition in Mexico. In 2015, the Open upped the ante once again by becoming a World Surfing League (WSL) Women’s QS6000 event, as well as a WSL Men’s and Women’s Pro Junior event.
“We’re super excited to have the best juniors in the world coming to Los Cabos to compete,” said Chris Cote, communications director and cultural ambassador for the Los Cabos Open of Surf. “Adding Pro Juniors to the QS6000 Women’s event in 2015 gave the spectators a really cool look at the future of our sport, and is the perfect complement to the Women’s QS, an event that will spotlight the world’s best women surfers at a break that is perfect to showcase high performance surfing.”
Produced and promoted by Boardwalk Mx, the Los Cabos event is sanctioned by the WSL with sponsorship by the Los Cabos Tourism Board (LCTB). Luis Palacios, LCTB’s commercial director, noted in a released statement, “We are thrilled to once again host this exciting event attracting surf aficionados and families alike to Los Cabos. Every year, the festival is growing and aims to attract visitors with interests not just in surf but art, authentic cuisine, music and more.”
